Biography

Alison Barker was born 9 January 1811 at Wemyss, Fife, Scottland to Alexander Barker and Grace Lockhart. She was Christened 14 January 1811 at Wemyss, Fife, Scotland.[1]

The following is from History of Newbury, Vermont:

Alexander Barker, James Latto, William Chalmers and Alexander Laing their families left Leven, Scotland, in March 1834, on the ship "Cyrus of Dundee." They sailed around the north of Scotland, after being by storms at the mouth of the Moray Frith. After a rough voyage of weeks, in which they saw no sail, they reached the mouth of the St. Lawrence, where they were detained a week by floating ice, and finally reached Montreal. They came by steamboat and canal to Burlington, thence by teams to Newbury, where all their families settled. They were hospitably entertained by Capt. Samuel Gibson, and others of their countrymen, till they could make homes for themselves and clear land. Nearly all of their company have passed away, and the few survivors have collected such memorials as remain. All were Presbyterians.[2]

She was united in marriage in about 1838 to Alexander Allison. They lived in Newbury village and then moved to Dodgeville, Wisconsin and died there. They had three children, two living in Wisconsin.[3] Children of Alexander and Elsie:

  1. Elsie (1843-1930) in 1866 married Samuel Dunstan in Dodgeville, Iowa Co, Wisconsin.
  2. Jeanette (1847-1929) in 1929 married William Henry Collingwood in Dodgeville, Iowa Co, Wisconsin,
  3. David (1850-) does not appear on the 1860 US Census,
  4. Ellen (1853-1912) in 1876 married John Thomas in Dodgeville, Iowa Co, Wisconsin,

ALEXANDER ALLISON, Sec. 29, P.O. Dodgeville; was born March 27, 1812, in Fifeshire, Scotland; is a son of David and Margaret (Webster) Allison; came to America in 1832, and, after a short stay in Montreal, settled in Newbury, Vt., where he followed the trade of shoemaker, which he learned in Scotland. He came to Mineral Point in 1845, and soon after to the Floyd settlement, buying 40 acres of his present farm of the Government; built a small log house and settled here; the log house stands fifteen rods to the north of the pleasantly located frame residence which supplanted it in 1868. Mr. Allison has 116 acres in the homestead, and 40 of timber in Wyoming, and is well to do in the world. He married in Newbury, Vt., Elsie Barker, of his native shire; they have three daughters - Elsie, Janet and Ellen. The eldest was born in Newbury, and the others on the Dodgeville farm. Mr. Allison is a Democrat, and, with his wife, a member of the Protestant Methodist Church.
