Biography

Alexander Barker was born in Scotland.

Alexander was born 06 February 1782 in Wemyss, Fife, Scotland to George Barker and Grizzel Baird. He was Christened on 10 Feb 1782 in Wemyss, Fife, Scottland.^[1]

He was united in marriage to Grace Lockhart (Grisel Flockhart) on 11 December 1801 at Wemyss, Fife, Scotland^[2] She was the daughter of an officer on Lord Nelson's flagship at the battle of Trafalgar.^[3]

The following is from History of Newbury, Vermont:

Alexander Barker, James Latto, William Chalmers and Alexander Laing their families left Leven, Scotland, in March 1834, on the ship "Cyrus of Dundee." They sailed around the north of Scotland, after being by storms at the mouth of the Moray Frith. After a rough voyage of weeks, in which they saw no sail, they reached the mouth of the St. Lawrence, where they were detained a week by floating ice, and finally reached Montreal. They came by steamboat and canal to Burlington, thence by teams to Newbury, where all their families settled. They were hospitably entertained by Capt. Samuel Gibson, and others of their countrymen, till they could make homes for themselves and clear land. Nearly all of their company have passed away, and the few survivors have collected such memorials as remain. All were Presbyterians.^[4]

Alexander died 28 November 1859 at Newbury, Orange Co, Vermont.^[5]He is buried at West Newbury Cemetery in West Newbury, Orange Co, Vermont.^[6][7]

Research Notes

There are several records of Alexander Barker born in Fifeshire, Scotland so finding the right one is a challenge. We know from the History of Newbury, Vermont he died at Ryegate Nov. 29, 1859.^[9] We know from the "Vermont Vital Records, 1760-1954," his estimated birth was 1784.^[5] In the "United States Census, 1850," there is an Alexr Barker living in Ryegate, Caledonia, Vermont with the Samuel A Newton family. He is age 64 so his estimated birth year in 1786.^[10] So, we must conclude that he was born sometime between 1784-1786. If I search "Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950 for Alexander Barker born in Scotland 1784-1786 and restrict the search to Birth, Baptism, and Christenings in the country of Scotland, State or Province of Fife I do not find any records for an Alexander Bark born in that time period. If I extend the search to between 1782 and 1788 I find Alexander Barker born 06 February 1782 in Wemyss, Fife, Scotland. He is the son of George Barker and Grizzel Baird. He was Christened on 10 February 1782.^[1]

We know from the History of Newbury, Vermont their children's were all born in Scotland and their birth dates are as follows:

Those names translated from Galic to English can be spelled Grace, Griselda or Grizzel.^[11] In "Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910" there is one record showing Alexander Barker married Grisel Flockhart on 11 Dec 1801 at Wemyss, Fife, Scotland.^[2]
