Biography

Introduction

After reading the entries in Savage's Genealogical Dictionary for the husbands of Elizabeth, I started to look for supporting evidence and discovered that two FASG's had written an article explaining all this and citing the appropriate deeds and probate records.[1] Following is a synopsis.[2]

Cast of Characters

  • Elizabeth _______, the wife and mother.
  • Husband (1) Thomas Barlow, b. c. 1630; died in Boston 23 Oct 1661, cooper : Barlow Children b. in Boston:
    • Elizabeth Barlow b. 13 Nov 1657; d. 17 April 1659
    • Sarah Barlow b. 18 July 1659, d. unm. near April 1678
  • Husband (2) John Coombs b. c. 1632; m. Elizabeth Barlow 24 Feb 1661/2; [3]died May 1668 Boston, cooper :Coombs Children b. in Boston:
    • Elizabeth Coombs, b. 30 Nov 1662; d. Plympton after 14 Oct 1723; m. 12 Jan 1687/8 Eleazer Cushman, her cousin.
    • John Coombs, b. 20 July 1664; d. Boston Jan-Feb 1709/10; m. Elizabeth (Ballentine) (Greenland) Yellings, widow
    • Mary Coombs b. 28 Nov 1666; d. 2 July 1728 Plympton; m. 18 Dec 1689 Benjamin Eaton
  • Husband (3) John Warren, died Boston 1677: Warren Child
    • Nathaniel Warren b. 27 May 1670; living 31 Aug 1691, 21 years of age. He deeded his share or right in the estate of his half sister Sarah Barlow to his half brother John Coombs[4]

The Property

This begins with a piece of land in Boston and it's various "owners." For our purposes, starting with Bartholomew Barlow, who left the property to his son Thomas Barlow in 1657. Thomas died in 1661. Administration of his estate was given to his widow, Elizabeth _____ "in behalf of herself and the childe." Elizabeth and Thomas had two children: daughter Elizabeth died young, so the child mentioned was Sarah Barlow.

Elizabeth, now Barlow, remarried to John Coombs, 24 Feb 1661/2 in Boston. Because Sarah Barlow was still a minor, use of her estate was granted to her mother and because John Coombs was Elizabeth's husband he had use of the property, which evidence shows he did not improve. When Coombs died in 1668, his small estate was left to the widow and the Coombs children, while the remainder of the Barlow estate was left to Sarah Barlow until she came of age, at which point her mother would have her thirds. Elizabeth and John Coombs had three children who all lived to maturity.

Elizabeth, now Coombs, remarried a third time to John Warren (also previously married). They had a son Nathaniel Warren. Elizabeth Warren died at Boston Jan 1671/2. She left no will. The inventory of her personal estate was valued at £33/14/6. Her husband John Warren presented a memorandum of goods that she wished bestowed on her children Sarah Barlow, Elizabeth, Mary and John Coombs, and Nathaniel Warren. Sarah Barlow was still underage (14) so the original Barlow property was allowed to be improved by John Warren until Sarah's majority. Warren died and for a short time his third wife had the use and improvement of the property.

After John Warren's death, in 1677, Daniel Turrell Sr. and John Coney, principals, and John Williams and Joseph Royal, the uncle, sureties, were named guardian of Sarah Barlow during her minority. In 1680, the same were appointed guardians of the Coombs children. Nathaniel remained with his stepmother, who remarried, but at age 15 he chose his uncle Joseph Royal to be his guardian.

Elizabeth _______'s children by all three marriages called Joseph Royal uncle at some point in the records, which has led to the possibility that she was originally Elizabeth Royal. More later.

Sarah Barlow died in 1678. Her estate was granted by the court to her four half siblings. Elizabeth Coombs, spinster of Plymouth, sold her brother John Coombs her share in 1687, recorded in 1717. Mary Coombs, residing in Charlestown, (probably living with her uncle), sold her share to Joseph Royal in 1689. John Coombs, evidence shows, had purchased Nathaniel Warren's share, which he subsequently sold to Joseph Royal also. John retained his own share, but eventually it became the property of Joseph Royal's son-in-law.

 ?Royall?

Elizabeth (___?___) (Barlow) (Coombs) Warren, had children by three husbands. Children by all three husbands called Joseph Royal an uncle. This would indicate that Joseph was her brother or brother-in-law (the husband of Elizabeth's sister). Joseph was married to a woman named Mary, whose surname is also unknown.

Joseph Ryall was the son of William Royall and Phebe Green. William and Phebe Green had no child named Elizabeth.[5]

Conclusion

Evidence indicates that Elizabeth was the sister of Mary (_______), the wife of Joseph Royall. Their surname is unknown and their parentage is unknown. Elizabeth was probably born between 1634 and 1639, based on the birth of her first child in 1657. There is a possibility she was born in Massachusetts, but could have been born in England also.

In reply to Anne B's comment,

Anne: Thank you for your information. Presently there is no reference to parents of Elizabeth Royal(l) who married John Warren 1668. And it appears that at least in the case of the mother you removed her. I do not have any information on her parents and have no objection to the removal, but do I need to do anything further with this? It is sometimes difficult when several people are involved to know who the intended recipient of an email suggesting a correction is. In any case, for my part, thank you for your care and attention to the matter. I assume this is a discussion for you and one or more of the other managers who have looked into the matter in more detail and are better informed about it. Let me know if I need do anything. Thank you.

This is the wife of a Mayflower descendant. She may be a Royall (and alt. spellings), [Mayflower Society uses Royall?], but she is definitely not the daughter of these parents (ie. Ryall-196 and Green-10205 who did not have a daughter Elizabeth. She is being disconnected.

Tim, Agree with your observation. Have you tried the route of requesting to join the trusted list in order to make the merger yourself? I am new in this wikitree world so I am a little hesitant to do it. But I will, if necessary. I came across your comment as I was trying to figure if Deborah's father was Joseph as shown here or Henry as appears in most of the related ancestry.com family trees.

Royal-390 and Royall-102 appear to represent the same person because: Father's name usually spelled Royall (but profiles exist for both spellings). Parents, siblings, and 1st 2 husbands are identical for both profiles. No clear sources for birth and death dates as the FindAGrave is a non-burial memorial.

Royall-102 and Royal-390 appear to be duplicates; all information consistent except birth date and death. The others below have been merged.

Royall-256 and Royal-390 appear to represent the same person because: Similar data. If they are not the same person, please add details and sources to indicate the difference

Royall Barlow-1 and Royall-102 appear to represent the same person because: Royall is the last name at birth. She first married a Barlow then Coombs. Barlow should be put in the other name box as she was not born with that name. Present name will be Coombs As all the dates are about then a best estimate indicating why this was chosen.

Unattached Coombs-45 (John Coombs) as spouse. No sourcing or reference given. Believe this was an error as John had married an Elizabeth (Royall) with a first married name of Barlow. This Elizabeth later went on to marrying third husband John Warren. If you locate sourcing to show its the same person of course we can merge. Thx.
