It has been suggested that John Barlow was the son of Alexander Barlow and Elisabeth Brereton. This appears to be groundless. It is also at odds with an ALLEGED coat of arms supposedly granted to a descendant (Joel Barlow) in the 19th century, except that the College of Arms has denied ever having granted any such arms to Mr. Barlow. "John Barlow's parents are not known from the records."[1].
"A" John Barlow was listed as a child of Sir Alexander Barlow in the funeral certificate of the latter, but as explained below that John Barlow was a different person than the emigrant to New England. [2]
A local history clearly states that John (son of Sir Alexander Barlow) died in "Spayne," so he would not have been the immigrant to New England.[3]
Note that Sir Alexander Barlow's will, transcribed in full in the History of the Ancient Chapels of Didsbury etc., at page 264-6, does not mention a son John, even though it does mention eight other children of the testator. This suggests that John had already died in "Spayne" by the 1617 date of the will, or that (like two of his brothers) he had taken holy orders, in which his vow of poverty would preclude his receipt of a bequest similar to those granted to Sir Alexander's children named in the will.
John Barlow's wife was named Ann. It has been claimed that she was Ann Ward, but there is no known evidence to support this and that Ann Ward is otherwise accounted for. The only marriage of a John Barlow to an Ann -- in the FamilySearch database during the relevant time is of a marriage [this sentence has been truncated in editing].
According to genealogical tradition John Barlow was born in Barlow, Chorlton, Lancastershire, England in about 1594/5 (or 1605, based on marriage to Ann about 1628, based on estimated births of children.). In his typescript book, Daniels says he can find no evidence for this connection. John married Ann (or Anna) in England before 1630.[4][5] They settled in Fairfield, where he owned land at least as early as 1650. His will was made 28 Mar. 1674, naming his wife Ann, son John, daughters, Elizabeth Frost, Martha Beers, Deborah Sturges, Isabella Clapham and Ruth Bradley. Inventory was done 9 June 1674.
John was an early settler of Fairfield, Conn. In 1639. He owned the lot next, southwest of Roger Ludlow, on Ludlow Square. He sold this place to Thomas Morehouse before 1653, and then settled on the beautiful plain, running northwest of Ludlow Square and Concord Field. The place of his house was known as Barlow's Plain. His will dated Mar 28 1674, and he left a large estate. [6]
Their known children were:
Note: see the birth order and years by Dale Kellogg now found on the profile of wife Ann with a link to the research.
Note: No sources have been found to show that Martha (Barlow) Berry (abt.1632-abt.1698) was his daughter. John Barlow named his daughter Martha with the last name Beers in his will of 1674. As such, Martha (Barlow) Berry (abt.1632-abt.1698) has been detached as his daughter.

Will 28 MAR 1674 Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut. His will names his wife Ann; son John; daughters Elizabeth Frost, Martha Beers, Deborah Sturgis, Isabella Clapham, Ruth Bradley. Sons-in-law James Beers, John Sturgis and Francis Bradley made an agreement with John Barlow 20 Nov 1674.[10][11]

Dale Kellogg, FOGS, (Connecticut Nutmegger 25:549 | Subscription link https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/connecticut-nutmegger/image?volumeId=11796&pageName=549) in a detailed examination of known evidence suggests a year of birth for Ann 1630-32; Elizabeth 1628-30; John 1644; Martha 1640; Deborah 1631-32; Isabella 1638-39; Ruth 1645-48. Kellogg concludes the marriage of John Barlow and Ann was about 1627 with Elizabeth as the first child born 1628.

This is the Chetham Society's Lancashire Funeral Certificates. Specifically, pages 45-46 note that their 5th son was named John. Is this enough to add Alexander Barlow-87 and Mary Brereton-311 back as his parents? Thank you- C
Does anybody object to detaching these people from this profile?
