Stephan Conley Barlow was born in 1842. He was the son of Lewis Barlow and Ruth Bishop. He passed away about 1921. [1]

Taken from the Bicentennial News: Stephen C. Barlow, Civil War soldier, born in Indiana, homesteader in Grant Township, was a busy and effective citizen of Dawson. He had a hand in many projects for the town. Mr. Barlow was born Jan. 15, 1842. His parents were natives of Kentucky, but pioneers of Indiana and Iowa....In Iowa, the Barlow's built a log house near Des Moines, and as others moved into the same area, he laid out a town-site on this land with the home in the center of it and added a room for a store, He named the town Rising Sun. which is now a suburb of Des Moines. He hauled all his merchandise up the Des Moines river from Keokuck on the Mississippi River. Steven Barlow was 16 when his father died, so he assisted in the store and on the farm until the Civil War broke out. On July 4, 1861, he enlisted for service, a member of Company E, Forth Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. At the end of that three year term, he reenlisted and served until his final discharge at Davenport, Iowa, August 23, 1865....He took part in many battles of that war and became an aide to General Sherman and went on the march to the sea through Georgia and the Carolinas.... by Elma Griffith

The Draper Family History by Mabelle Estella Draper Hummel states: Stephen Conley Barlow ( S.C. Barlow in our history ) married Ruth Clark Draper on 11 March 1864. She dies from “consumption” (TB) on the way home from Colorado where Stephen took her to get well, but she didn’t. She was only 32 years old. They had four children, Eugene, Lewis, Elvon and Ada.

Stephen then marries 16 year old Fannie Ingram and by this union have 10 children. The second marriage takes place 1 June 1878 and they have 10 children: Thomas, Ethel, Arthur, Stephen Frances, Florence May, Leona Ruth, Elma Ralph McKinley, Eva and Ester Loverne.

His son, Eugene, from his first wife, Ruth Draper Barlow, ran away from home, and dies in a tragic accident at age 16 while riding a horse in Sundance, Wyoming, trying to round up a couple stray mules. The horse crashes through a fence at high speed, with the horse falling on Eugene, where he dies of internal injuries a short time later.

His son Lewis H. Barlow, also from his first wife, Ruth, also runs away from home as soon as he gets the chance, but his life turns out much different. He becomes the owner of one of the biggest and oldest ranches in Wyoming, still in operation by the 4th generation Barlow family members. Elvon grows up and moves to California, building and selling houses. Ada stays in Dawson and marries Christian Heim.

Our historian and genealogist was Mabelle Estella (Draper) Hummel, a niece of Ruth Clark Draper Barlow. She kept very detailed records down through the Barlow grand children and of the Draper Family until the 1960's
