MR. JOHN L. BARLOW The death has occurred at Te Aroha of Mr. John Lancelot Barlow, who left Lower Hutt in 1920 to settle there with his family. Mr.Barlow was born at New Plymouth in 1868, and coming to Wellington served an apprenticeship with the firm of W. T. Jackson in Manners Street, becoming a journeyman tinsmith. He married Miss Matilda Harris in 1889, and afterwards built up a successful plumbing business at Lower Hutt, carrying it on up to and through the period of the 1914-18 war. He served for varying periods on school committees and the Lower Hutt Borough Council, and also took a keen interest in bowling, playing at tournaments throughout the North Island. He purchased a property at Te Aroha and set up an ice-cream manufacturing business, which still continues. Mrs.Barlow died about a year after the family went north and Mr. Barlow married again. His second wife survives him. He leaves a grown-up family of five sons and three daughters. Of the five sons the two eldest fought in the 1914-18 war and the two youngest bear arms in the present struggle. They are Messrs. Jack (Sydney), William (Wellington), George (overseas), Roy (overseas, missing), and Bert (Auckland). The daughters are Mrs. Robert Eastwood (Te Aroha) and Mrs. N. Pope and Mrs. E. Pope, of Tauwhare. A fourth daughter, Mrs. W. Wiggins, Auckland, passed away some time ago.[8]
