Biography

Flag of Nottinghamshire (adopted 2011)
Mary (Barnard) Williams was born in Nottinghamshire, England.

Mary Bernard or Barnard (spelled "Bernard" by Anderson)[1]

Mary Barnard was baptized 24 September 1609, daughter of Rev. Richard Bernard and (wife unknown).[2][3] She was baptized at Workshop, co. Notts., where her father was serving as Vicar at that time.[3]

Family

Mary married 15 Dec 1629, Rev. Roger Williams at All Saints, High Laver, Essex, England. [4] Formerly Mary was a "gentle waiting woman" to Joan Altham, Lady Masham's daughter by a previous marriage, at Otes in High Laver, Essex.[3]

Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, p 430, indicates she had six children, and Robert Charles Anderson in The Great Migration Begins ... agrees.

Children:[1]

  1. Mary b Aug 1633 Plymouth; mar John Sayles
  2. Freeborn b Oct 1635 Salem
  3. Providence b Sept 1638 Providence
  4. Mercy b July 1640 Providence
  5. Daniel b Feb 1641 Providence
  6. Joseph b Dec 1643 Providence

Roger and Mary emigrated to New England in 1631, settling initially in Plymouth, then Salem, and then as founder of Providence, Rhode Island.[3]

During King Philip's War, Mary resided in Newport, Rhode Island.[3]

Mary died after August 1676 at Providence, Rhode Island.[1] A former version of this profile reported a death date of April 1, 1683, without revealing the source.[citation needed]

From Descendants of Roger Williams Book IV: ...his wife Mary having predeceased him in 1676.

Sayles-146 and Barnard-32 appear to represent the same person because: Submitter has mistaken Mary Williams for nee Sayles.

apparently was intended to be same family grouping...the submitter still had 3 files on rootsweb trees with same data. But see my notes explaining the error on Mary's surname as Sayles rather than Barnard.

Added Great Migration Begins citation and information. Possible issues which might need attention:

1) Anderson reports that Mary's mother is Unknown.

2) Just an FYI, Robert C. Anderson in Great Migration Begins spells the name "Bernard" for both Mary and her father.

Will leave it to managers to decide. Thanks! Thanks!
