Diana Katherine Barneby was born on 5 May 1913. She is the first child of William Theodore Barneby and Verena Henrietta Turnor who married on 12 April 1912 at St Paul's church, Knightsbridge, London. Her father was a barrister-at-law, but never practised as such. The family home was Saltmarshe Castle, Bromyard, Herefordshire (now demolished).[1] Her birth was registered at Bromyard, Herefordshire in the second quarter of 1913.
The 1939 England and Wales register lists Diana K Barneby (born 5 May 1913, single, private means) residing at Saltmarshe Castle, Bromyard, Herefordshire, with her father William T Barneby (born 31 January 1873, landowner, JP, DL) and her mother Verena H Barneby (born 2 November 1890). Added later next to her name on the Register is Wells, indicating her later married name.
Electoral Registers for 1939 also record her as being on the roll for the Pembridge Ward, Kensington and Chelsea, by dint of an address at 5 Ladbrooke Terrace.
On 25 January 1944 Diana Katherine Barneby married Major John Harman Glossop Wells at Holy Trinity church, Sloane Street, Chelsea, London.[2] The marriage was registered at Chelsea, London, in the first quarter of the year.
Two children were born in the 1940s.[3]
Passenger Lists for 5 September 1946 record Diana Katherine Wells (aged 33 with child of about 15 months) embarking aboard the "Alcantara" at Southampton, bound for "East Africa". She is on troop transport with her country of future permanent residence recorded as "East Africa". She is also noted as the wife of an Army Officer, with her last address in the UK being Saltmarshe Castle, Bromyard.
Passenger Lists for 21 April 1948 record Diana Katherine Wells (34) and child arriving at Southampton aboard the "Empire Trooper" having embarked at Mombasa, Kenya. Her country of last permanent residence is given as Uganda, and England is noted as her country of intended future permanent residence. She is to stay with her parents-in-law at Constantine, nr Falmouth, Cornwall.
Passenger Lists for 11 December 1956 record D K Wells (correct dob) and her second child (born 1940s) arriving at London aboard the "Carthage" having embarked at Singapore. Her husband (army officer) is showing on the original manifest but presumably did not travel as his entry is crossed out. Their country of last permanent residence is given as Malaya, and England is noted as their country of intended future permanent residence. They are to stay at 12 Sydney Place, Bath, Somerset.
Diana's husband died in 1984, at a nursing home in Salisbury, Wiltshire, aged 72, home address listed as Frome, Somerset.
Diana Katherine Wells of Berkeley Grange, Berkeley, Frome, Somerset, died on 28 August 1987. National Probate Calendar - 1988) Her death was registered at Mendip registration district, Somerset, in September 1987, aged 74 - full date of birth confirmed.
