Biography

Jamestown Church Tower
Edward Barnes Jr was a Jamestown colonist.

Edward Barnes, son of Edward Barnes and Joyce Adell Weldon, was born about 1595 in England. He reportedly died about 1650 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.[1]

"Edward Barnes, mercer," was a subscriber to the Second Virginia Charter 1609 of the Virginia Company of London, the founders of the Jamestown Colony, Jamestown, Virginia. He paid in £50 and received 6 shares in the Company.[2]

Confirmation that Edward Barnes actually traveled to and settled in Virginia has not been found. He is not the Edward Barnes on the List of the Living in 1623/24 (see Research Notes ). It is possible, but unlikely, that he was the Edward Barnes transported by Edward Drew prior to October 1639.

  • Edward Drew, 200 acs., Accomack Co., Oct. 10, 1639, page 685. W. upon land of Thomas Powell. Due for trans. of 4 pers: Edward Barnes, Georg Waterman, Jone Bayly, Edward Jones.[3] This record does not include a wife or children and no further information has been found for this Edward Barnes.

Research Notes

The birth date/place used here, 8 June 1595 at Allhallows Honey Lane, London, England,[4] belongs to Edward Barne, son of Edward Barne and Katherine Wright. This child died on 4 October 1599, aged 4 years, and was buried at Mercers Chapel. [5]

Edward may have been born about 1595, but the source used for his birth is not his and has been changed to "about 1595" in England. (Strutton-11 15:45, 7 August 2022 (UTC))

Note: Middle names were not commonly used at this time and no record has been found using "William" as Edward's middle name. It is being removed but can be replaced if documentation for it is provided. (Strutton-11 15:45, 7 August 2022 (UTC))

The Edward Barnes who was signatory to the 2nd Virginia Charter could not be the Edward Barnes on the List of the Living in Virginia at Elizabeth City County on 16 February 1623/24.[6] The Elizabeth City Edward was an indentured servant, the unmarried son of Alice, widow of Dr. Lawrence Bohunne (apparently 2nd husband). She had asked the Virginia Company to free her son from his seven years' service. The request was denied as it was determined that Edward Barnes was a Virginia Company servant, not one of the late Dr. Bohunne's men.[7] [8] A signatory to the Virginia Charter would not be an indentured servant. Barnes-1267 and Barnes-1266 do not represent the same person because: they are father and son
Please see Barnes-1266. Seems the wife needs to be removed from one of them. OR, the husband's profiles need to be merged.

I am afraid this individual's details are incorrect. The Edward Barnes born in June 1595 at Honey Lane was born to the mercer Edward Barnes (1562-1641) and his wife Katherine, nee Wright (1567-1643), and died aged four in 1599. Source: the Honey Lane parish registers, available on Ancestry. Also no relative from this branch of the Barnes family every lived in, or died in, Virginia. Best regards.
