Biography

William Barnes was the son of William Barnes and Rachel (Unknown) Barnes. The only record that relates to William is a record of his death in the Salisbury Vital Records, which states that William son of William Barnes died 11: 4: 1648 (June 11, 1648).[1][2] From 1643 to 1680, Salisbury was part of old Norfolk County,[3] so, based on place names at his time of death, he died in Salisbury, Norfolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

There is no evidence that definitively establishes William's date or place of birth. Since his parents estimated date of marriage was about 1638 and there are birth records that establish that he had siblings who were born in April 1648, April 1646 and January 1643/4,[4] It is most likely that he was born sometime in 1638-1642, although it is possible that he was born in early 1645.

The first record relating to his parents shows that they probably settled in Salisbury sometime in 1639-1643.[4] It is therefore fairly likely that William was born there. If William was born in 1638-1640 before his parents moved to Salisbury, however, he was probably born elsewhere (Ipswich?) in the Massachusetts Bay Colony or perhaps in England. If he was born in Salisbury or elsewhere in the Massachusetts bay Colony, his birth location at his time of birth would not had a county name since the Massachusetts Bay Colony did not have counties until 1643.[3]

Barnes-660 and Barnes-244 appear to represent the same person because: William Barnes only had 1 son named William. There is no birth record for him. His DOB is estimated as probably sometime in 1638-1641, so pick one and mark it uncertain.
