Albert Barnes was born in 1871 at Chadderton, Lancashire, the son of John Barnes and Sarah Ann Barnes formerly Hanson. [1]
He was baptised on 12 November 1871 at St. Peter's Church, Oldham. His parents were then living at Middleton Rd and father John was a minder. Albert's date of birth was recorded in the baptism register as 3 September 1871. [2]
In the 1881 census the Barnes family was living at 46 Crompton St, Chadderton, Lancashire. Father John, aged 34, was a cotton spinner. Mother Sarah A was aged 33. Albert was aged 9 and younger brother Emanuel [sic] was aged 4. [3]
In 1891 the family was living at 3 Jemmie Lane, Oldham. Father John, aged 45, was a cotton self actor minder. Mother Sarah A was aged 42. Albert, aged 19, was an iron slider. Emmanuel, aged 14, was an iron turner. [4]
In 1901 the family was living at 39 Radcliffe St, Chadderton. Father John, aged 53, was a milk dealer working from home. Mother Sarah Ann was aged 52. Albert, aged 29, was working with his father as a milk dealer. [5]
Father John Barnes died in 1901 aged 54 years. He was buried at St. Matthew's Churchyard, Chadderton on 8 October 1901. The burial register recorded he had been residing at Radcliffe St at his death. [6]
Albert Barnes married Olive Wilkinson on 14 December 1901 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Busk St, Chadderton. Their marriage certificate recorded Albert was a bachelor aged 30 years and a milk dealer. His father was named as John Barnes, a self actor minder. Olive was a spinster aged 27 years. Her father was named as William Wilkinson, a cotton mill manager. At the time of their marriage Albert was living at 39 Radcliffe St, Chadderton and Olive at 21 Granville St, Chadderton. Their witnesses were George Taylor and Flora Wilkinson. Flora was Olive's sister and George Taylor was Flora's future husband. [7]
This couple had one daughter named Edith Barnes, born 1907 in Chadderton. She was baptised on 11 February 1907 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Busk St, Chadderton. Her parents were then living at 39 Radcliffe St. Edith's date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as 12 January 1907. [8]
In the 1911 census Albert and Olive were living at 39 Radcliffe St, Chadderton. Albert, aged 39, was working for himself as a milk dealer. Olive was aged 36 and daughter Edith was aged 4. Also living with them was Albert's widowed mother Sarah Ann Barnes, aged 62. [9]
In 1921 the family was living at 186 Rochdale Rd, Oldham. Albert, aged 49, was a weaver's weft man at Derker Mill Co., Derker St, Oldham. Olive, aged 46, was a velvet weaver at Oldham Velvet Co., Victoria St, Chadderton. Edith was aged 14, and still at school. Sarah Ann Barnes was aged 73. [10]
Albert's mother Sarah Ann Barnes died in 1923 aged 74 years. She was buried on 26 April 1923 at St. Matthew's Churchyard, Chadderton [Grave A 85]. The burial register recorded she had been residing at 186 Rochdale Rd, Oldham at her death. [11]
The Barnes family left England to emigrate to New Zealand, sailing aboard the SS Athenic on 1 May 1924 from Southampton and arriving in Wellington. Passenger records recorded Albert Barnes, aged 52, was a cellarman. Mrs Barnes, as named, was aged 49 and daughter Edith, aged 17 years, was a domestic. Their last permanent address in the UK was recorded as 70 Trafalgar St, Oldham. [12]
Of interest Norman Kerfoot, Olive's nephew, son of her sister Jane, also sailed on the same ship. Aged 21, he was a cotton operative. His last permanent address in the UK was at 56 Knott Lanes, Bardsley.
The 1928 electoral roll for Auckland Suburbs recorded Albert and Olive's address as 18 High Street, Avondale, Auckland. Albert was then working as a butcher. [13]
Olive Barnes died on 4 August 1934 at Auckland District Hospital of chronic interstitial nephritis and myocarclitis, months. She was aged 59 years. Her usual address was 11 Highbury St, Avondale. Olive's death certificate further recorded her parents were William Wilkinson, a mill manager, and Sarah Wilkinson nee Hulton. She had been aged 28 when she married Albert Barnes in Oldham, Lancashire. Born in Lancashire she had been residing in New Zealand for 11 years prior to her death. At the time of her death she had one living daughter aged 27 years. [14]
Family believe her health problems occurred as a result of the Yellow Fever she had as a child.
She was buried on 6 September 1934 at Waikemete Cemetery [Nonconformist Area C, Row 23, Plot 5]. [15]
The 1935 and 1938 electoral rolls for Auckland Suburbs recorded Albert, daughter Edith Rogers and son in law Gloster Rogers all living at 11 Highbury Street, Avondale. Albert was then a pork butcher and Gloster a carpenter.
In the 1946 and 1949 electoral Rolls for Waitakere their address was 8 New Windsor Rd. Albert was still a butcher and Gloster a carpenter. [16]
Albert Barnes died on 27 December 1951 aged 81 years. [17]
He was buried on 28 December 1951 with wife Olive at Waikemete Cemetery [Nonconformist Area C, Row 23, Plot 5]. [18]
Their headstone reads - In Loving Memory of Olive Dearly Loved Wife of Albert Barnes Died 4th Aug. 1934 Aged 59 years. At Rest with Jesus. Also Her Loved Husband Albert Died 27th Dec. 1951 Aged 81 years. Re-United.
