Josiah Barnes was born on November 27, 1798, in North Carolina. In 1800, Josiah is living in Wayne, NC with his parents, Jesse and Elizabeth. Between 1804-1807 it appears the family left NC for SC. There is a deed to Jesse in 1809 for 320 acres in Darlington County, SC. This is where they are found in the 1810 census. Josiah Barnes married Rebecca in South Carolina in 1822 when he was 24 years old. In the 1830 census, Josiah and his family are living in Henry, AL. Found in "Some Old Settlers of Dale County Alabama”, by Preston Mathes: “Barnes, Josiah - 1831 Sons John, Stephen, Josiah, Jesse & William. John and Stephen were good Blacksmiths. Jesse taught school. John was Justice of the Peace in 1865 Reconstruction times.” Josiah's father, Jesse, passed away in 1838 in Darlington, South Carolina, at the age of 76. Josiah is still in Dale in the 1840 census. His mother, Elizabeth, passed away between the 1840 and 1850 census records most likely in the area she was last living in - Darlington, SC. In the 1850 census, there is: Josiah Barnes 52 Rebecca Barnes 47 Jesse Barnes 20 Josiah Barnes 18 William Barnes 16 Elizabeth Barnes 13 Rebecca Barnes 11. In the 1860 census indicates Josiah, Rebecca, and their son Josiah are still in Dale. Between 1860 and 1866, the family lost Rebecca and Josiah Jr. The 1866 census indicates Josiah Sr and Martha living with 2 young children in Dale. No soldiers in this household were listed as died in battle or from illness. The 1870 census in Dale shows: Josiah Barnes 72 Martha Barnes 37 Mary Barnes 8 Eddie Barnes 6 Ollie Barnes 3 Woodard Barnes 1. Josiah died in 1875, at the age of 77.
Josiah Barnes, Sr., husband of Martha Brewer Barnes, is buried Mt Gilead Primitive Baptist church, Geneva Co Rd 41 in Geneva Co at the Mt Gilead Primitive Hardshell Baptist church, up the road a few miles north of Wesley Chapel Methodist church, the burial site of his wife, Martha Brewer Barnes. Research has not determined why she chose to bury her husband at Mt Gilead in 1875 and then request her own burial at Wesley Chapel in 1914. We have placed this file under Wesley Chapel for the convenience of Barnes and Brewer and allied families' researchers.
