Biography

Stephen was born in 1667. He passed away after 1711.[1]

Stephen was the son of William Barnes of East Hampton, where he was by 5 July 1653 when allotted land.

He married Mary Barnes, daughter of John Barnes and Hannah Linsley.

Stephen was a member of a church in Branford, Connecticut in 1711, where his youngest four children were born.[2]

Children

Their first three children were recorded at East Hampton; the others at Branford, CT, suggesting that they removed to Connecticut from Long Island about 1701.

  4. Benjamin, b Dec 13, 1702;[3] he died at Southington, Conn., 11 Feb 1776. He married 7 Dc 1727 Hannah, dau of Daniel Abbot and Hannah Brooks.[4]
  5. Stephen, b Jan 2, 1704-5;[5] m Jan 5, 1725-6 Marha Wheadon, dau of Thomas Wheadon and Hannah Sutliff "of Southington". He died 27 Mar 1777.
  6. Sarah, b May 17, 1708; m Nov 23, 1731, Ezekiel Rogers

Research Notes

  • While an 1875 history of Southington, CT, could not place his origins:
    • "Stephen Barnes (date and place of birth unknown) married Mary _____. Tradition says that he or his ancestors came from Long Island to Branford, Conn. [6]
  • A 1970 article by Jacobus includes an extensive study of the Barnes families of Long Island and Branford, including identification of Stephen Barnes' origins.[7]

Barnes-5098 and Barnes-3968 appear to represent the same person because: Both Stephens are the child of William and Elizabeth. Both married Mary Barnes, daughter of Hannah Linsley.
