Biography

Stephen was born in 1667. He passed away after 1711.^[1]

Stephen was the son of William Barnes of East Hampton, where he was by 5 July 1653 when allotted land.

He married Mary Barnes, daughter of John Barnes and Hannah Linsley.

Stephen was a member of a church in Branford, Connecticut in 1711, where his youngest four children were born.^[2]

Children

Their first three children were recorded at East Hampton; the others at Branford, CT, suggesting that they removed to Connecticut from Long Island about 1701.

• While an 1875 history of Southington, CT, could not place his origins:
  • "Stephen Barnes (date and place of birth unknown) married Mary _____. Tradition says that he or his ancestors came from Long Island to Branford, Conn. ^[6]
• A 1970 article by Jacobus includes an extensive study of the Barnes families of Long Island and Branford, including identification of Stephen Barnes' origins.^[7]
