Biography

Roger Barnes' birth date of 25 September 1910 is taken from his Death Index record as his actual Birth Index record only has the registration in the July quarter of 1910 at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, whereas he was actually born at Kemerton, in the Tewkesbury Registration District of Gloucestershire, England as given in the 1911 England Census of 2 April 1911.

Prior to that event the Parish Records of St Nicholas, Kemerton have that he was baptised on 6 February 1911 for Edward Henry Barnes, farmer, and Eva Mary Barnes, when 4 months of age.

When just 6 months old he was living at "Beechwood", 790 Fishponds Rd, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, the residence of the Robinson family, with the Head of the household 78 years old Emma Allen Robinson, his mother Eva Mary Barnes (42), elder sister Peggy Barnes (3), and 5 Servants, according to the 1911 England Census.

In 1932, as a bachelor, Roger Barnes, Chemist's Assistant, was the recipient of his mother, Eva Mary Barnes' effects to the amount of 1194 Pounds Sterling 7s 3d. She having been a Widow, late of 4 Devon Rd, Fishponds, Bristol who passed away on 18 July 1932, with probate granted on 1 November 1932 at Bristol, Gloucestershire.

The next officially recorded event would appear to be his marriage to Florence Mary Crisp on 16 June 1934 at St Mary's Parish Church, Fishponds, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, with his Marriage Certificate No.66 having the following details: Roger Barnes, Bachelor, age 23, Chemist's Assistant residing at 762 Fishponds Rd, Fishponds, with father Edward Henry Barnes (deceased), and Florence Mary Crisp, Spinster, also age 23, a Music Teacher, residing at 1 Marston Rd, Knowle, daughter of Alfred Crisp a Railway Controller. Witnesses were Alfred Crisp and Peggy Laughton[1].

In the 1935 Gloucestershire, England Electoral Register (ER) , Roger and Florence Mary Barnes were resident at Merecombe, Knole Park in the Parish of Almondsbury, Thornbury, Gloucestershire, and were so on every ER to and including 1939. In that year the 1939 England and Wales Register confirms Roger's birth date as 25 September 1910 and gives his current occupation as a Tobacconist (Retail), with their residence at Merecombe, Thornbury, Gloucestershire.

The next ER they are on is after WWII in 1946 when they are resident at Merecombe, Knole Park, Thornbury, Gloucestershire. In the 1947 ER, the same location that comes under a section headed Overlane, Almondsbury, and again in 1950 that appears to be the last ER with them on.

Roger Barnes death aged 68 years was registered in Thornbury, Avon, Gloucestershire, England in the January quarter of 1979.
