Biography

Thomas was probably born in the 1660s ir 1670s and it is likely that he was born at the Grange which is near the town of Kilkenny in the County of Kilkenny, Ireland.

His older brother, George, had inherited the estate at Donore (Donover) in County Meath but, having no children, the Donore estate then passed to Thomas.

He was the Mayor of Kilkenny in 1725

He may have moved to Donore at some point because his wife, Joyce Watch, was from Belair, County Meath.

Thomas and Joyce had two children:

  • Thomas (1721-c1796) + Jane Robbins
  • Juliana (17??-1751) (died, no children)

[1] Files of Barbara Paterson (née Barbara Carolyn Boake 1927-2009): Barbara's extensive notes on the Barnes family were the start of this biography. These contain a hand-written family tree. The author appears to have been “Arthur ?? Barnes [middle name not legible], 1969” In the upper left-hand corner of the chart: "Rough trial draft from data at Westland Moynalty Meath, four courts, Kings Inn, Castle Dublin, books, letters, etc. Final copy with additional information and refrences [sic] to document may be made later." The chart shows Thomas Barnes + Joyce Watch ("of Belair Meath") and under the name of Thomas appears "Alderman Kilkenny / Mayor 1725 / Conveyances 1743 / Kilkenny - Donore"

[2] Bomford, Peter, “The Irish Bomfords 1617 to the Present” available at http://www.bomford.net/IrishBomfords/Chapters/Chapter25/Chapter25.htm "Thomas and Joyce had a son and a daughter, Juliana who died in 1751. The son, another Thomas born 1721, was ‘of Donore’ and also of Killkenny, and he did live at Donore." Also "Thomas, the second son, was Alderman of Kilkenny and the Mayor there in 1725. However it looks as thought he moved to Donore, at any rate he married a Meath girl, Joyce Watch of Belair."

[3] “Transactions of the Kilkenny Archaeological Society,” by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, on pg 196, it refers to Thomas Barnes, mayor of Kilkenny.
