Biography

Lucille Katherine Barnes b. 27 Feb 1920, Vine Grove, KY d. 19 Nov 2011, Eugene, OR. Daughter of Robert Barnes and Susie ? After Hunter died Lucille married Layton Christensen who died in 2009. Lucille was a supervisor of food service for the University of Oregon.

From Findagrave: Lucille Katherine Satterwhite, 91, died the morning of November 19, 2011 in her daughter's home. Her passing was peaceful and quiet. Lucille was born February 27, 1920, in Vine Grove, Kentucky, and grew up on the farm of her parents, Susie and Robert Barnes. She is survived by two younger sisters, Frances Lynch of Kentucky and Mary Weigel of California. Five brothers, one an infant, predeceased her. Lucille was a Eugene resident for more than 50 years.

Lucille's growing up was difficult, but regarded as normal for the times. She learned from life on the farm that diligent work had high value, and she was busy her entire life. When not working for others, she took great pride in the care of her home, garden, flowers, fruit trees, and her sewing. She often gave neighbors, friends and family the products of her labor.

Lucille also worked outside the home. One of her early jobs was in the student food service at U of O, where she made several long term friends. After that Lucille worked at the Skipworth Youth Facility for a number or years and cared deeply for the youth she met there. When she retired they sang "You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille." She also received a national line-worker-of-the-year award while at Skipworth in 1977. Lucille worked for and submitted entries to the Lane County Fair every summer for more than 40 years, earning many blue ribbons. It was the one summer event that she most looked forward to.

Lucille married Hunter William Satterwhite in 1938, the father of her four children. After WWII the family moved to Oregon, eventually settling in Cottage Grove. Hunter died in 1976. Some years later she married Layton Christensen who died in 2009. Lucille is survived by three children: Lynne Smith, Marie Kemp-McGarvey, and Frank Satterwhite. A son, James, died in 1976. She had ten grandchildren: Erich Kemp, LeAnn Kemp-Beecroft, Lynnelle Smith-Newell, Robynnelle Smith, Mark Satterwhite, Carolyn Satterwhite-Young, Steve Satterwhite, James Satterwhite, Melissa Satterwhite-Cunningham, and Will Satterwhite. Lucille is also survived by fifteen great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson.

Friends, neighbors, and family will miss her.
