Nathaniel Barnes was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, the son of Isaac Barnes and Mary Hunting. Shortly thereafter, his father lost all of his property through a defective title to real estate he had purchased, and the family moved to Cobbleskill, Schoharie County, New York. After ten years, the family then settled in Otsego County, and endured the hardship of pioneer life. Upon turning 21, Nathaniel struck out on his own determined to make a better life for himself. He hired out to work for ten dollars a month, and was able to attend school enough to acquire a rudimentary education. Work at that time consisted mostly of building turnpike roads, and before the age of 30 he was taking contracts for portions of the Farmers', Huckeberry, Snake Hill, and the Newburgh and Plattekill pikes. He bought his first real estate in 1822, and once satisfied that Newburgh was a desirable place to establish a family seat, he married and settled there at Middlehope, engaged in farming pursuits. He married Effie, the daughter of Dr Wm Dusinberre, of the town of Plattekill, Ulster County, on 3 Jan 1828, Their children were William D, Nathaniel Jr, Daniel D, and Mary E. He passed away in 1879.
