William Freeman Barnes was born near Danville in Lawrence County, Alabama on October 29, 1825.[1] He was the son of William, born in Virginia, and May, born in Tennessee.[2][3][4][5]

He married Rebecca Stover, with whom he had at least seven children:

He lived in Lawrence County until his death on 13 May 1913.[6][7][3][4][5][2][8]

He was in the Confederate army as a member of the 5th Alabama Regiment, Company D, from February 1863 until his capture in Selma in April 1865.[1]
