Research note

FindAGrave and many Ancestry tree owners seem convinced that the Rhoda Barnes who was the daughter of Benjamin is the same Rhoda Barnes who married Ephraim Hildreth. I have connected this profile, which began as Ephraim's wife, to the father Benjamin. I did not find any records establishing the link, but I did not find any other Rhoda Barneses of the period who were suitable candidates for the wife. There was a Rhoda Barnes, born 1772, daughter of Amos, but she would not have married in 1783. Problems with the theory include mention in The Barnes Genealogy[3] that Rhoda, daughter of Benjamin, died young. It seems possible that the author said she died young because he had not found records of her later life. I did not find a death or burial record for a Rhoda Barnes dying young. There is also the question of how Rhoda got from Massachusetts, where her family lived, to New Hampshire (a neighboring state), where her husband lived and where she married. One possibility might be that Ephraim had Hildreth relatives in Massachusetts whom he might have been visiting when he met Rhoda. - Kelts-7 16:18, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
