Joseph was born on 31st October 1869 in Clitheroe, Lancashire.[1] He was the illegitimate son of Margaret Barnes. His baptism took place at St Mary Magdalene, Clitheroe on 14th November 1869.[2] Both his birth and baptism dates were recorded on the register, and that his mother was a spinster.
Marriage
Joseph William Barnes and Mary Alice Frankland were married after banns at St Mary's, Clitheroe, Lancashire on 26th September 1894.[3] Joseph was a 24 year old bachelor, working as a ? labourer and living at 4 Brook Street, Clitheroe. Joseph did not give any information on his father. Mary was 20, a spinster working as a winder and living at 28 Well Terrace, the daughter of William Frankland who was a taper. They each signed their own name on the register and the witnesses to the marriage were Matthew Croasdale and Alice Kendall.[4]
