Gideon Barnes was a PVT in the War of 1812 and is also known as the founder of Barnesville, Ga.
He acquired Barnesville by trading one Indian pony for it, and set up a Tavern, Trading post and Inn. It was set up along the stage coach line coming from the trains from Macon. From there it grew into the town it is today.
He married Sarah Crawford Raiford on April 2, 1823. Together they bore 5 children: Millicent W. Barnes, Augustus H. Barnes, Fredrick N. Barnes, Maria Lousia Barnes and Sarah Virginia Barnes. His wife, Sarah died in 1861.
Then he remarried Huldah Ann Aldridge in 1862.
