Obituary:
Miss Necie Caroline Barnes was born in Bertee County, North Carolina March 1, 1859 [see note 1 below] and died at Delphos, Kansas July 28, 1909, aged fifty years four months and twenty-seven days.
In 1859, the same year in which she was born, she came with her parents to Indiana, Henrietta County, [see note 2] where she lived for a few years and then she moved to Whitley County, Indiana.
In February 1876 she was married to Mr. James Snook. In 1880 she came with her husband to Kansas settling in Ottawa County, near Delphos. One year ago they moved to Delphos to make their home. They had ensconced themselves in a cozy little home and were looking forward to enjoying life, when suddenly she was stricken down.
She leaves a husband, one son, three sisters, three brothers and four grandchildren as chief mourners, also a host of friends. [1]
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Delphos and one of its honored officers at the time of her death. The funeral services were (at) her late home and under the auspices of the Rebekah Lodge.
Mr. Snook has the sympathy of the town and community in this his great loss.
Notes:
1. Both references 1 and 2 show 1853 as the year of Necie's birth. This earlier date is also consistent with all census records available: 1870, 1880, 1900 and the 1905 Kansas State census.
2. Based on documents that show the place and dates of birth of her brothers, the Barnes family more likely moved to Indiana in 1855 or 1856 than later. Or if this obituary is correct that they moved the year she was born, as early as 1853. Also they likely came to Hamilton rather than Henrietta County, and also lived in Madison County. They purchased land in Whitley County and moved there in 1861.
3. Necie is not named in the 1860 US census that shows all the rest of the family. However, there is a daughter shown - Sarah - with an age given of 8, which matches Necie's age and not Sarah's, who was born in 1859.]
