Biography

Orrange Dorris Barnes was born June 22, 1879[1] in Lapel, Indiana to William Thomas and Maggie Barnes.[2-10] He attended school through eighth grade[10] and then helped his father in his painting and decorating business. [11]

On Feb 11, 1900, Orrange married Margaret Ellen Horine.[12] Like his mother, his wife went by the name Maggie. In 1900 Orrange and his wife livedin Salem, Indiana, and his mother-in-law Anna Horine and a boarder lived with them.[6] Orrange worked as farm laborer.[6]

By 1910, Orrange and Maggie had returned to Madison County and were living in Anderson, Indiana.[7] The 1010 census shows Orrange working as an interior decorator,[7] the business of his father.

Sometime between 1910 and 1920 Orrange and wife moved to Kansas. His mother-in-law came with them, and they settled in Sheridan, Kansas. Orrange continued to work as an interior decorator.[8]

The 1930 census[9] shows them in Wichita, Kansas; Anna Horine was still living with them. Orrange's occupation is shown as "paper hanger."

The 1940 census also shows Orrange and Maggie living in Wichita. Orrange is 62; his occupation in this census is blank.[10]

Orrange died in 1948 in Wichita.[3]

Notes and sources

1. Date of birth, 1877, 1878 or 1879?: I've assumed the date of birth shown on Orrange's WWI draft card is correct. His headstone shows a year of birth two years prior, 1877, and most other records indicate 1878.

2. "Orrange" versus "Orange": Based on his headstone, WWI draft card, and 1900, 1920 and 1940 census records, I've assumed "Orrange" is correct. Other records, including Indiana marriage records and a book documenting the history of Lapel, Indiana, show only one "r" in his first name. As evidenced by the many ways his name is spelled in census records, people had trouble with it.
