Biography

John was born 5 Mar 1669 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts. He was the son of Jonathan Barnes and his wife Elizabeth^{[1] [2] [3]}

On July 10, 1693, he married Mary Bartlett, the daughter of Joseph Bartlett and Hannah Pope of Plymouth^{[4] [5]}. Their children included:

1. Their first child was a son, John, born 26 June 1694 in Plymouth^{[6] [7]}
2. Their second child was a daughter whom they named Hannah born 8 January 1695 in Plymouth^{[8] [9]}
3. Their third child was a boy whom they named William born 19 October 1697 in Plymouth^{[10] [11]}, who died July 24, 1714^[12]
4. Their fourth child was a boy whom they named Seth born 25 August 1699 in Plymouth^{[13] [14]}, who married Sarah Moodie in 1722
5. Their fifth child was a daughter whom they named Mary born 8 February 1701 in Plymouth^{[15] [16]}
6. Their sixth child was a boy whom they named Jonathan born 16 December 1703 in Plymouth^{[17] [18]}, who married Phebe Phinney, daughter of Josiah in 1726, and who died in 1748^[19]

He married second Ann Bonum on 1 March 1738 in Plympton.^[24]

John died 15 May 1744 in Plymouth and was buried in Burial Hill in Plymouth. John Barnes died on May 15, 1744, and is buried in plot B286 of Burial Hill, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts^[1]

Probate

On 5 June 1744, Samuel Foster (Gent) and Jonathan Barnes (cordwainer), both of Plymouth were granted the administration of his estate.^[25]

In 1745, his widow Anna of Plimton for consideration quitclaimed her right of a dower in her late husband's estate to his children and/or heirs, viz., John Barnes, Seth Barnes, Jonathan Barnes, Mary, wife of Richard Waite, Thankful Bartlett, Elizabeth Curtis, Lydia, wife of Lemuel Barnes, the heirs of Hannah Drew ( Mary Ryder, Lemuel Drew, Sarah Drew, James Drew, and William Drew).^[26]

His inventory was taken on 27 October 1744 in Plymouth. It included an enslaved person Nero and his bedding.^[27]

In 1746, a distribution of his estate was divided between his heirs, John Barnes, Seth Barnes, Jonathan Barnes, the children of Hannah Drew ( Mary Rider, Samuel Drew, and William Drew), Mary Waite, Thankful Bartlett, Elizabeth Barnes, and Lydia Barnes.^[28]

In 1746, an account of his estate was recorded.^[29]

There is no indication of a son, Nathaniel/Nathan Barnes, born to this couple.
