Biography

Mary (Barret) Thayer immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Mary Barrett was born probably in England about 1635; the exact date is unknown. She was presumably the daughter of Thomas Barrett and Margaret Barrett.[1]

Her parents had settled in Braintree, Massachusetts Bay Colony where they remained several years; her father was made a freeman there in 1645.[1]

On January 1, 1654/5 at Braintree, Mary married Sidrath (or Shadrach) Thayer.[2][1]The ceremony was performed by Capt. Torrey.[3]Shadrach was born in May of 1629; the son of Thomas and Margery (Wheeler) Thayer; he died October 19, 1678.[4]

Mary (Barrett) Thayer died in Braintree on 2 mo. 2. 1657[5] which is interpreted as April 2, 1657.[4][1]Her husband Shadrach married (2nd) to Deliverance Priest and had seven more children. He died October 19, 1678 and his widow, Deliverance, died January 17, 1723.[6]

Children:[6]

  1. Rachell b 9 mo. 9th 1655.[7]d. (23) (9) 1656[5]
  2. Tryall, daughter, b. 12th mo, 7th, 1656.[7]

Research Notes

  • Mary Barrett's father is not the same person as the 16 year old boy by the name of Thomas Barrett who immigrated on the Increase on April 15, 1635.[8][9][10]
  • Evidently Joseph Hartwell Barrett was in error when he wrote that both of Mary and Shadrach's children died young[1]as Tryall married John Burge[11] [12] and had children, dying at Chelmsford on 1 Jan 1737.[13]
  • Marriage record Marriage record for Mary Barrett and Shadrach Thayer: Braintree records say 11 mo 1. From other Braintree marriage records it is clear that the month is given first, followed by the day. In this case, the marriage occurred on the first day of the 11th month, which is 1 of January in the Julian (old calendar).[2]
