Biography

Margaret was a daughter of John Barry - Margaret's family is in dispute; she was either Margaret de Barry or Margaret de Burgh. Also a Margaret de Berkeley (see her profile for sources) is reported to have married Thomas FitzMaurice and born him at least one son.[1] [2]

1st - married Thomas Fitzgerald "according to the "Earls of Kildare Addenda" - Thomas na Nappagh Fitzgerald, the son of Maurice FitzJohn Fitzgerald, married Margaret, daughter of John, Lord Barry of Olethan, and by her was father of Maurice, first Earl of Desmond. [3]

2nd - married Reginald Rosel in 1299, without the King's licence, for which she paid fine [4]

Died after 5 May 1320.

Fitzgerald family historian Walter Fitzgerald, founder of the Journal of the County Kildare Archaeological Society in 1891, calls Thomas FitzMaurice FitzGerald "Lord of Connello, Decies, and Desmond" (as was his son, Thomas FitzThomas) and shows Margaret as Margaret de Burgh, whom King Edward I called his "cousin". Historian Fitzgerald says that (after her husband's death in 1298) she re-married in 1299 to Sir Reginald de Russell:

Please note that Margaret's identity is in dispute - she was either a de Barry or a de Burgh.
