Biography

Her mother was Miss Magdalena (Lena) Klein, who was a native of Alsace, which was then part of Germany, and her father was Mr. Emil Heinrich Barth, a native of Baden-Baden, Germany. Lena Klein came to New Orleans in 1866, when she was 3 years old, and Emil Barth came to New Orleans in 1881,when he was around 19.

Frances married William Edward Clair within months of the 1920 census. By the census of 08 Apr 1930, she and William had been married 10 years and had their own household at 1201 France Street. [1] William (38) and Frances (36) had children Evelyn (8), Merlin (5) and William (2). All were Louisiana born of Louisiana parentage, and not working at the time. Frances' sister Florence Meduna (34) and her nine month old son Frank Meduna also lived with them; Florence was a cigar roller in a factory.

Frances was widowed in 1938. She is listed in Polk's 1940 city directory of New Orleans as Frances Clair (widow of William), renting at 916 Desire Street.[2] In 1956 she was listed as Frances H. Clair (widow of William E.), living in a house at 2258 North Miro Street.[3] She was at the same address in 1960, but was working as an inspector.[4]

Frances Burth Clair passed away on 14 Jul 1971.[5]
