Valentine Barthel with his family and a number of other people left Strasburg, France (Alsace) where he had earlier been the gentleman keeper of Napoleon's stables, to settle around Siebringville, Ontario, Canada, where he became a prosperous man. He had two sons, one of whom was George Henry, who had five children with his first wife, and when she died he married Margaretha Esch. Suffering financial reverses due to the treachery of a nephew, George Henry had to sell out and he migrated to Plymouth in southeast Nebraska in 1880, where a number of people from Canada had been locating. One of his sons entered the Lutheran ministry, another moved to Blackwell, Oklahoma, and some of the family later went to Brighton, Colorado. George Henry himself later moved to Blackwell, though he died in our community at his daughter's home. Son Sam came out to Red Willow County in 1886, set up his homestead, and then married Anna Neumann in 1891. Meanwhile, Gustav Roedel had come from Brazil, met Sam's sister Marie, and they also married in 1891. Just then Sam's step-mother died and Sam and Anna moved back to Plymouth, "so that there would be a woman in the house back there." Gustav and Marie Rodel took over Sam's homestead farm to remain here the rest of their days. ""Taken from St. John's Lutheran Church 95th Anniversary Directory -1979-""
