Samuel was born in 1821 to Noyes Bartholomew and Elizabeth Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut.
Samuel is supposed to have attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, as did Catherine Moore.
In about 1845, Samuel married Catherine Moore. They had at least eight children, all born in Lisbon, Illinois.
In 1872, they moved to Kansas as did their daughter Libbie's family.
In 1879, they moved to Buena Vista, Colorado.
In about 1890, Samuel and Catherine divorced. Samuel lived with son Fred in Nebraska. Catherine lived with daughter Kate in Manhattan.

Deacon Bartholomew is a farmer; he settled after his marriage, in Lisbon, Ill.; but moved in 1872, to Mound City, Kan., and in 1879, to Buena Vista, Colo., where be became interested in the mines.
He was prominent in the erection of the first Congregational Church in Buena Vista, of which he was chosen the first deacon.
