Gilbert was born in 1904 in Wandsworth. Gilbert Bartholomew joined the RAF and trained as a pilot and then as an officer. He was sent to China in 1934 to study Mandarin. There he met Zou Zou Howell and they married in St Michaels Church in Peking in October 1935. He commanded Squadron 18 during the Battle of Britain. He later became Air Attaché in Chunking at the end of the war and then was present at the surrender of Japan in Hong Kong. In 1949 he became Air Attaché in Ankara. That August he was killed in a plane crash along with two other British RAF officers (Burnand and Maude) and the Turkish air crew.
He is buried in Putney Vale cemetery next to his brother Francis. When Agnes died her body was interred in his grave.
NB Most men of this family are known as "Bart" including Gilbert senior and junior!
