He married Sarah Abbe on 25 January 1845, in Hartford, Connecticut, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. He was buried in Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, United States.
David Lewis Bartlett was nineteen years older than Julia Pettibone when they were married. He had founded a firm in Hartford, Connecticut, which manufactured iron. Later he moved to Baltimore and established a new similar firm under the name of Bartlett, Hayward & Company.
He became very prominent in financial and civic affairs in Baltimore and was active in historical and church societies. Late in life he published a volume of letters he had written to describe his travels across the continent.[1][2]

Sarah Ahle, b. Sept. 25, 1817: d. Sept. 18, 1866. Married Jan., 1845 or 1846, David L. Bartlett, b. Dec. 6, 1816, in Hadley, Mass. ; d. in Baltimore, Md., May 11, 1899. He was the son of Daniel and Louisa (Stockbridge) Bartlett. He commenced the business of manufacturing iron in Hartford, removed in 1844 to Baltimore and established a firm that continued until his death with but slight changes, under the name of Bartlett, Hayward & Company. He held offices in various financial, civic, historical and church organizations and was Republican candidate for mayor in 1887. After a tour of the continent he published a volume of letters descriptive of his experiences. He m. (2) Julia E. Pettibone, of Simsbury, Conn. Children of Sarah Abbe : i. Edward L., b. July, 1847, was in business with his father in Baltimore, m. 1867, Julia McParland, has six children ; ii. Ella C, b. Dec, 1854, m. 1875, Charles P. Robinson, lives in Brooklyn, has two children.[5][6]
