Biography

Rev. Ebenezer Hinds, son of John Hinds, was born in Bridgewater, July 29, 1719, died at Fairhaven, Massachusetts, April 19, 1812.

He married (first) Susannah Keith, of Bridgewater, born 1727, daughter of John and Hannah (VVashburn) Keith, and granddaughter of Rev. James Keith. She was buried near the present Congregational church in Bridge water.

(**) "He married (second) in 1751, Lydia Bartlett, daughter of Richard Bartlett. His second wife died May 12, 1801. Her brother - Richard was a soldier at Annapolis Royal in 1775 under Colonel \Vinslow in seizing and disposing of the neutral French.....Lydia Bartlett, the second wife of Elder Hinds, was the daughter of Richard Bartlett, an Englishman, living in Boston. She had a brother Richard, who served as a soldier at Annapolis Royal....He married Mary Robinson, of Bridgewater, a daughter of Gain Robinson."

The epitaph of Elder Hinds on his tomb stone in the old Middleboro graveyard reads: “In memory of Rev. Ebenezer Hinds, who died April 19, 1812, in the 94th year. ‘I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course, I have kept my faith, henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness'."

CONFLICT IN SOURCE MATERIAL

History of the early settlement of Bridgewater in Plymouth County, Massachusetts by Naham Mitchell is a problematic source as it lists 2 Bartlett women marrying Reverend Ebenezer Hinds. p. 109 under Wright Bartlett from Hingham lists a daughter " Lydia Bartlett m. Ebenezer Hinds 1751." But the following page, 110, includes this "Richard Bartlett, an Englishman, lived in Boston and had a s. Richard, and a D. who m. Rev. Mr. Hinds of Middleborough." Since there is a conflict we must look to other sources to determine the father of Lydia Bartlett who married Reverend Hinds. A SECOND SOURCE for RICHARD BARTLETT being the father of Lydia Bartlett who married Reverend Ebenezer Hinds is the HINDS FAMILY GENEALOGY. If more sources are found we will add them. We would also note that Ebenezer and Lydia named one of their children Richard Hinds. They didn't name any children Wright Hinds.
