Biography

Benjamin Bartlett, son of Robert Bartlett and his wife Mary Warren, was born in Plymouth (now Duxbury), Plymouth Colony, before June 6, 1633.[1] He became a freeman on June 6, 1654 and had to be at least 21 years old at that time.[1]

During his life he married three times. Six childeren were born to the marriages. The first marriage was to Susannah Jenney, who died by 4 April 1654. There were no children born to this marriage.[1]

The second marriage was to Sarah Brewster about 1656 or 1658. Three children are know to be from this marriage - Benjamin Bartlett, Rebecca Bartlett, and Samuel Bartlett.

Benjamin Bartlett had a third marriage to Sissilla (Cecilia) ______, whose last name is unknown. after 5 March 1667/8, when the second wife was mentioned in court and before 21 Jan 1678/9, when Cecilia consented to the sale of land. She died after 1 Sept 1691, when she signed a receipt. She was called the "aunt" of Sarah Covel.[1]

He served as juryman, grandjuryman, constable, collector of taxes, selectman, and as a representative to the General Court. He died between the date of his will on August 21, 1691 and the date of the probate, September 15, 1691.[2]

Sarah (Brewster) Bartlett and Benjamin Bartlett had the following children:[1]

  • Benjamin Bartlett, b. say 1658; m. Ruth Pabodie
  • Samuel Bartlett, b. say 1662; m. Hannah Pabodie
  • Rebecca Bartlett, b. say 1664; m. (1) William Bradford; m. (2) Robert Stanford

Children of Benjamin Bartlett born probably in Duxbury. Because of the uncertainty of the death of Sarah and Benjamin's marriage to Cecelia, the mother of the following children is unknown. They are not proven as descendants of William Brewster.[1] They are Richard Warren descendants through their father.

  • Ebenezer Bartlett, b. bef 1670, say 1666; m. Hannah (_____) bef. 1 Mar. 1697/8.
  • Sarah Bartlett, b. bef Sept. 1670, say 1668, d. Plymouth, 20 Feb. 1687/8; m. Robert Bartlett in Plymouth, 28 Dec. 1687; no children
  • Ichabod Bartlett, b. bet Sept. 1670 and My 1674; m. (1) Elizabeth Waterman in Marshfield, 28 Dec. 1699; m. (2) Desire Arnold in Duxbury, 14 Nov. 1708.

Based on date he was admitted as a Freeman on Jun 6,1654, his birth was prior to Jun 6,1633, and he was probably the eldest son of Robert Bartlett. His will was dated Aug 21,1691 and inventory taken on Aug 28,1691.

He married, first, by Apr 4,1654 at Plymouth,MA, Susanna Jenny. She died by Aug 18,1655. No children by this short marriage.

He married, second, Sarah Brewster.

He married, third, by Jan 21,1678, Cecilia _____. She survived her husband Benjamin.

Children (by second marriage): Benjamin Bartlett Jr, Rebecca Bartlett Bradford Stanford Samson, and Samuel Bartlett.

Children (possibly by third marriage): Ebenezer Bartlett, Ichabod Bartlett, and Sarah Bartlett Bartlett.
