Hartwell Bartlett was 16 years old in 1860, living in Middlebury, Wyoming County, New York and working as a farm laborer for Chas. A. Collins, age 24, farmer. ^[3]. He was working for the next-door neighbor. Living next door is Leonard Bartlett, age 42 and Maria Bartlett, age 36, listed with three children: Hartland, age 18, Wilber, age 11, and Charles, age 4 ^[4][5].

On August 27, 1862, Hartwell Bartlett, age 18 enlisted at Perry, Wyoming, New York as a private in the 24th Independent Battery, New York Light Artillery^{[6] [7]}.

Maria Bartlett is listed as mother and beneficiary on 1881 pension for Hartwell Bartlett, 24th Ind. Inf, New York Light Artillery; Battery L, 3rd Reg., New York Light Infantry.^[8][9][10].

BARLETT, HARTWELL -- Age 18 years. Enlisted, August 27, 1862 at Perry; mustered in as private, August 30, 1862, to serve three years; captured at Plymouth, NC April 20, 1864; died of disease, September 5, 1864, at Andersonville, GA while a prisoner of war.
