Inquest into Death

An inquest was held before the Coroner and a jury, on Monday, January 11, at the Post Boy Hotel, to enquire into the cause of death of Emma Fletcher Bartlett, aged 16 months, daughter of Robert Henry Bartlett, carpenter, residing at Westbank Terrace, Toi Toi Valley.

The mother of the child deposed: On Saturday last, about five o'clock, I had washed up the tea things and left the basin with the hot water at one end of the table while I went to the other end to get a cloth out of the drawer. The child went up to the table and got hold of the table-cloth and pulled it, tipping the basin of hot water over her. I took her to Mrs. Hill's, a neighbor, who put a plaster of flour and butter on the scalded places. Her husband then went for Dr. Scaly. Dr. Scaly, who was the next witness, :deposed : About six p.m. on Saturday I was called to see the child. I found she had been scalded on the chest and upper part of the abdomen as far as the navel, and also in the right armpit. I attended her until she died this morning. Convulsions came on yesterday, and she died of convulsions produced by the irritation arising from the scald. Verdict accordingly.
