AMOS BARTLETT. was b. in Cumberland, R. I., March 17, 1777.[1] He was tall, of sallow complexion, quiet in deportment, and had a good faculty for business and money making. He was a tanner. Went to Harmar, Ohio, in 1803, and on the bank of the Muskingum, directly opposite the foot of Washington street, Marietta (then a stockade fort), built a house and tannery. The house (1880), with additions, is in good repair, i. e., the first story, which is of stone. In 1811, he sold the property and went to Parkersburg, Va. (now West Virginia), where he also carried on business as a tanner until his death, from pulmonary disease, Sept. 29, 1815. He was buried in the Harmar, Ohio, burying ground, by the side of his brother, Jeremiah. The horizontal sandstone slab, with its inscription nearly obliterated, was, in 1880, well fixed in its place, and a large sycamore tree encroaches upon the grave at its foot.
He married in Harmar, Ohio, Sept. 16, 1806, Mary Reardin. [2] She married again after his death. [3]
