Biography

Enoch Bartlett, born Newton, Mass., Sept. 27, 1742; died about Oct. 23, 1825, age 82, at Newry, Me.; married (1) June 23, 1766, in Boston, Elizabeth Segar. One of their children: Relief, b. May 2, 1769, at Newton, Mass.^[1]The numbers refer to the numbering used in the book to identify each person also discussed in the book.

150 Relief Bartlett, born Newton, Mass., May 2, 1769; married Oct. 24, 1790, Stephen Estes, of Bethel, Me. He was the son of Daniel and Mary Estes, who came to Bethel, late in life. He was probably descended from Matthew Estes, son of Robert Estes of Dover, England. Matthew Estes came to Dover, N. H., where he married Philadelphia, daughter of Ronald Jenkins. They were of the society of Friends. Daniel Estes, father of Stephen, was of Berwick, Me., and subsequently Shapleigh. About 1795, he came to Bethel with his sons, Benjamin, Stephen, John and Richard. Another son went to New Brunswick and remained there.
Stephen Estes lived in Bethel and later on Howard's Gore. He was engaged largely in farming, lumbering and in trade. He left home to purchase goods in New York and never returned and his disappearance was ever a mystery to his family and friends. His wife subsequently married Abner Foster of Freedom, Me.
