Josiah was born in 1802 (either May or July) in Sampson County, North Carolina. He is the son of Andrew Bass and Rebecca Pate. He passed away on 6 May 1898 in Barbour County, Alabama and is buried in Old Hovey Cemetery, Tyler Crossroads, Barbour County.[1]
Josiah married Mary A Lee about 1828, probably in North Carolina. No marriage record has yet been found.
In 1850 Josiah and Mary are living in Barbour County, Alabama. Their oldest son, Josiah Bass Junior (1828-1903), is not in the household; he has already married. In the household with Josiah and Mary are their children:
