Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Lovey Bass was a North Carolina colonist.

Lucy was born about 1707. She is the daughter of John Bass and Love Harris.

Name

There is some question as to whether this daughter was Lucy (Loucy) or Lovey. The only source for the name "Loucy" appears to be the will of John Bass, her father. In it he leaves his "Loving daughter Loucy Bass one hundred acres... on the north side of Urah Swamp...."[1] The transcripts of the will available online indicate there was some difficulty in reading the original script. It is easy to see with early 18th century writing that "Lovey" could be read as "Loucy."

7 May 1761, Lovewell Bass and her heirs of Northampton Co. sold Jethro Bass (son of John Bass and wife Elizabeth, Lovewell's brother & sister-in-law) 100 acres on the north side of Uraha Swamp. It was signed by Lovewell Bass (X), Lucy Jones (X), Thomas Cagly (X) and witnessed by John Barnes Murdaugh and Charles Counsell - August court, 1761.[2] This is the land left by John Bass to his "Loving daughter Loucy [Lovey] Bass" in his will.

This does appear to definitely link the "Loucy Bass" of John's will to Lovey Bass. I am therefore changing the Proper First Name to Lovewell. Strutton-11 14:12, 11 April 2016 (EDT)

Research Notes

Lovewell "Lovey" Basse, born Abt. 1707 in Chowan Co., NC. She married George T. Anderson Abt. 1751; died Abt. 1770 in Granville Co., NC.

Notes for Lovewell "Lovey" Basse: It appears that she never married George Anderson based on his will. Pg. 21 of the Dowd/Silvestri shows that on 3 Aug 1768, Nathan, base born son of Lovey Bass, was bound to George Anderson, On 18 Jul 1770, Dicey, aged about 4 years, base born child of Lovey Bass, was bound to Mary, wife of George Anderson.

Northampton Co., NC DB 3, Page 121: 7 May 1761, Lovewell Bass and her heirs of Northampton Co. sold Jethro Bass (son of John and Elizabeth Bass) 100 acres on the north side of Uraha Swamp. It was signed by Lovewell Bass (X), Lucy Jones (X), Thomas Cagly (X) and witnessed by John Barnes Murdaugh and Charles Counsell - August court, 1761. {This was land inherited from her father.}

Notes for George T. Anderson: Will proved May 1770, named Nathan Bass, Lid Anderson (dau of Lishe Anderson), Lovey Bass, William Petteford (son of Lorrane Petteford), George Petteford, Margaret Bass, his wife Mary (1 shilling), their three children Jerry (Jeremiah?), Kate Harris and Betty Smith (1 shilling each).[3][4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lovey by comparing test results with other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lovey:

Bass-2237 and Bass-1042 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person, both daughter of John Bass and Love Harris. The death date of 1732 was used because she is named in the will of John Bass dated 1732. Her death date should be "after" 1732. These two need to be merged.
Forest,

Since you do not think that Bass-2237 and Bass-1042 should be merged at this time, what do you propose to do? Do you think that John Bass and Love Harris had two daughters named Lovey? Can you provide evidence for the birth and/or death dates on this profile? The two profiles do need to be merged or one of them removed as daughter of John and Love Bass.

Bass-2237 and Bass-1042 are not ready to be merged because: they have wildly different dates and locations

If Lovey was daughter of Love Harris Bass, she must have been born before 1714 when John Bass married second wife Mary Unknown. She most likely was born 1707-1709. John's will appears to name daughters by age. Loucey/Lovey is listed between daughters Sarah and Mary so born before John married Mary.
Bass-1043 and Bass-2237 are not ready to be merged because: Lovey Bass and Lucy Bass are the same person. All duplicates should be merged into the lowest Wiki ID # - Bass-1042.
Bass-2237 and Bass-1043 are not ready to be merged because: Different mothers... Other facts also need to be checked before merging.

Bass-2237 and Bass-1043 appear to represent the same person because: same but differing birthday, birthday overlaps with sister in same year so not likely. Either wrong name or worng birth year, either was does not matter and should be merged with one or the other
