Biography

James Bates of Lydd, yeoman, born 2 Dec 1562 in Lydd, Kent, England, was the son of John Bates and Mildred Ward.[1][2]

He died and was buried March 2, 1613/14 at the age of 51 in Lydd, Kent, England.[2] His will was dated Feb. 27, and proved March 31, 1613/14.[1]

"His will dated Feb. 27, and proved March 31, 1613/14, gives his wife the use of certain lands; gives Robert, son of his deceased son, Robert, L20; gives his two daughters each L20 and certain lands; and small bequests to the children of his son James. Then, after giving certain lands to his son James, he divides his remaining lands equally between his four other sons, each son's portion apparently being valued at L100. He names his wife Mary executrix and his cousins Clement Bate and Thomas Bate, jurats, of Lydd (sons of his uncle Thomas Bate), overseers of his will."

The will of James Bate, the elder, yeoman, proved 31 March, 1614, to Robert, son of son Robert, deceased, when 21; Judith, daughter of son Robert, not 16; daughters Mary and Rachel, not 21; sons James, Thomas, Edward, Clement and Isaac; William and Richard, sons of son James; Thomasine, daughter of son James. Research Notes

Just James. A prior version of this profile called him "James John Edmund Ward Bates, Sr." At one point in 2014, he was John Bates. At that time, a G2G proposal, generally accepted, was made to change his given name to James. See Proposal to change given name from John to James ... for the sources cited, reporting his name as James. See also the 2021 comment and reply regarding his name.

Wife Mary Martine. James Bate or Bates' wife is presumed Mary Martine, a daughter of James Martin and Joan Adams, otherwise the "Maria Martin alias Batt," a "natural" daughter of James Martin who appeared in court about her father's estate.[3] For details about the Martin-Adams marriage, see "Biggs Family" in "Notes," New England Historical and Genealogical Register 92 (1938);397, 397n; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.

Why is he called "James John Edmund Ward Bates?" (As opposed to James Bates?) --Gene
posted by GeneJ X
I'm not seeing a direct source or the names John, Edmund, and Ward. However, John is his father's name, "EDWARD" is a family first name and Ward is his mother's maiden name. So, it's quite possible he was given several middle names, Not yet documented though.

Thank you, Faylene.

The matter of his given name was the subject of a G2G discussion in 2014, with a consensus that James should rule the day.

I have added a research note regarding his name and plan to update it to "James."

It appears John James Bates (-1600) and James John Edmund Ward (Bate) Bates Sr (1562-1614) are the same person. Same spouse (with UNMERGED MATCH profiles), Mary (Martine) Bates (1565-1610) and Mary (Martine) Bates (1563-abt.1620).

NOTE: BATES IS THE MOST PREVALENT SURNAME USED IN DOCUMETS. PROPER NAME IS JAMES JOHN WARD BATES.

CAUTION! 2 SPOUISES NAMED MARY MARTINE BATES ARE AN UNMERGED MATCH.. DIFFERENT MOTHERS AND DATES.
