Jonathan was the son of John Bate(s) and his wife Deliverance, born April 29, 1750, in Weymouth Massachusetts.[1]
Chamberlain did not mention this Jonathan Bates, nor any other children of John and Deliverance, in his book The history and genealogies of Weymouth, Massachusetts. [2] Chamberlain and Bicknell both identified the Jonathan Bates who married Dilla (Deliverance) Trufant in Weymouth on 1 February 1781[3][4] as this person's first cousin Jonathan Bates, the son of Jonathan and Deborah Bates who was born 27 November 1751.[2] These authors did not explain how they determined that Deliverance's husband was that man and not this one, but it is likely that they based the identification on local tradition, at least in part.
Jonathan could be one of the five children (first names not given) of John Bates who are recorded as having died at Weymouth in October 1751,[5] when he would have been a year old. It is possible but less likely that he is the Jonathan Bate who died at Weymouth on 20 September 1761,[6] as it would be unusual for a 10-year-old child's death to be recorded without including the name of the father.
