Bateman family reunion MINUTES of 1988 (p279) mention a letter dated July 30, 1930 from Seaton Swain to Herbert Swain noting that "Grandpa" Nicodemus Bateman's favorite hymn was "I'm Going Home to Die No More."
Fred Braxton Swain was a grandson of Nicodemus Bateman. Fred told these stories to his granddaughter, Carol Lawrence Vidales: My grandfather, Nixie Bateman, was a stern, southern gentleman. He was a hard-working man, worked as a farmer, woodworker, a carpenter. Grandpa Nixie used to stay at my house when I was a young child. When I grew up we didn't have knives as boys; they wouldn't let us have them. And Grandpa Nixie, when he visited our house, he used to loan me his knife. I used to borrow it and thought that was the greatest thing in the world to borrow his knife and go out to the wood pile and do some whittling. I really enjoyed seeing him and having him in our home so I could use his knife. During the latter years of my grandfather, he used to stay at our house quite a bit. He had a full beard, a moustache, and a chin beard that was quite long. He used to stroke this beard to the right with his hand and the beard grew that way-to the right of his face. Facing him you could see that this beard was to the right, and you would wonder how it was there, but if you lived with him you could tell very well how it was trained that way from him stroking it time and time again. He was a medium-built man. When I knew him he was quite old. And when he come to see us, he always had a cane. He used a cane in walking. He did the chores around the house with chopping wood for the cookstove and shucking corn to feed the stock. And he always enjoyed doing those chores to help out. He was not one to just sit down and not help around the house. He always wanted something to do. He was a great man.
