Disambiguation
Note: This profile is for the Sergeant William Bateman who was made freeman on May 18, 1631. He is the man who was trading with William Pynchon.
Please do not confuse this profile with William Bateman b. about 1558 who died at Pullens Point.
Please do not confuse this profile with William Bateman b. 1 Mar 1585 Bedford, England who appeared at Concord about 1640 and moved to Fairfield a few years later.
Note: this profile needs to be rewritten and compared with William Bateman so it complies with the Disambiguation notice above.
William Bateman immigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony by 18 September 1631 when he attended the inquest of another William Bateman's death in Charlestown. [Were they father and son?] He had arrived with his wife and two or three children.
1632 William was the defendant Sgt. William Bateman in a case 5 June
1634 The general court revoked William Bateman's freeman oath 14 May
1638 William was granted planting ground in Charlestown, upon settling title with the local Indian leaders (possibly the same)
William Bateman of Concord/Fairfield was a different person (as the above had already taken the Freeman's oath in 1631):
1640 William had moved to Concord where he took the freeman's oath 2 June
1641 William and son Thomas estate valued at ££348 in Concord
1644 William moved to Fairfield, CT with Concord minister John Jones whose congregation went with him to Fairfield
1650 Bought land from Thomas Sherwood
1654 William sold his home lot to son-in-law Henry Lyon
1656/57 William wrote his will 24 March left £5 to grandson Joseph Middlebrook upon 18 years and divided the estate, half to son Thomas in Concord and half to Elizabeth's husband, Henry Lyon.
1657 William Bateman died 27 April 1657 in Fairfield, CT
Clues of William Bateman's origin: Concord was settled in 1635 by Watertown residents; he may have come from there. Or from Cambridge where other early Concord settlers originated.
Will
The Will of William Bateman was dated 24 Mar 1656. It was exhibited in Court 20 Oct 1658. William left one half of his estate to his son Thomas, now of Concord. He left the other half to his son-in-law Henry Lyon; except he left £5 to his grandson Joseph Middlebrook then under 18, with the provision, should Thomas die the £5 to be divided between Thomas and Henry.[1]

Bateman-4337 and Bateman-18 appear to represent the same person because: Both the father of Elizabeth wife of Henry Lyon. The birth date on Bateman-18 is unsourced, but the place is the same on both profiles.
Bateman-4337 and Bateman-18 do not represent the same person because: Bateman-18 is unsourced, profile notes Multiple people may be conflated in this profile
Bateman-4337 has baptism source naming his father.
Despite the Disambiguation notice at the top, somehow this profile still ended up (or maybe always was) conflated with William Bateman (1585-1658) Bateman-188.
This profile is for the Sergeant William Bateman who was made freeman on May 18, 1631. He is the man who was trading with William Pynchon.
I think part of the problem is that Savage conflated the two men, but as this William Bateman became a Freeman in 1631, he's certainly not the same one who became a freeman in 1641 in Concord.
I've added the Conflated box, and plan to move the connections and sources related to the William Bateman of Concord and Fairfield to the other profile. If there are Profile Managers and Trusted List members who would like to be added to the other profile, please let PGM know. Thanks!
THis could be the marriage of the parents if they are correct
Alice, daughter of John Skiner, married Willia Butman in Harwich, St Nicholas, Essex, England.<ref>
Marriage:
"Essex, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812"
Essex Record Office; Chelmsford, Essex, England; Essex Church of England Parish Registers
I think the current reference is a general one for the whole series, there are 3 volumes and 2386 pages in total. The actual page for the profile of two easily confused William Batemans is on pages 130-131. https://www.americanancestors.org/DB393/i/12107/131/23894490
I suggest that we delete the image and just include a citation to that record in the FamilySearch database "England, Essex Parish Registers, 1538-1997" in a Research Note explaining that it is a possible record for him. The record is available online on FamilySearch and we do not know whether this is the same persion or not so attaching it as an image may create confusion.
HI, I'm descended from a William Henry Bateman who is listed in a church record with his wife Joan and their son, Hector b. 1745 in England. They come to Rhode Island at some point, where the Batemans established a hotel in Newport, RI. There are some sources that claim William H. is "Lord William Henry Bateman of Castle Hill, Hereford, England" however I don't find any connection to the titled Batemans. If anyone has info on William Henry, I'd appreciate it.
This profile appears to be a duplicate to William Bateman. Both died the same year and in the same place. But both profiles say they should not be confused with one another, and are marked as Rejected Matches.
Anderson says there were only 2 William Batemans in the time period:
One being William Bateman who died in 1630 in Pullen Point, Massachusetts.
The other William Bateman, Anderson says he was probably the Sargent William Bateman who was trading with William Pynchon. Anderson shows him being of Concord in 1640 where he became a freeman in 1641, and who removed to Fairfield Connecticut after a few years.
The latter William Bateman, according to Families of Old Fairfield 1:38. Jacobus in FOOF reports that he was of Concord, was made freeman in 1641, and removed to Fairfield. Per FOOF, he wrote his will March 24, 1658, and it was proved in October 1658. The same source shows son Thomas, daughter who married Thomas Lyon, and another daughter who married Joseph Middlebrook. This daughter is currently shown as Mary (Bateman) Middlebrook
Based on these two sources, it certainly appears that -188 and -18 are the same person.
A father was recently attached, without source. I also see that this profile relies heavily on unrecommemded sources and could benefit from a;overhaul to bring it up to the standards of other PGM profiles. Would one of the profile managers or Trusted List members like to take this on?
I've added a comment to this profile about possibly merging with -188, which is currently shown a Rejected Match, but I'm not sure why, based on information in both profiles, as well as what Anderson and FOOF both say.
Bateman-188 and Bateman-18 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be the same person. Same wife, same dd and dp. BD and BP differ, but are approximately consistent.
Note about biography: what is now Cambridge, Massachusetts was called Watertown when the early settlers arrived. The area was not named Cambridge until after Harvard College was founded there. Today's Watertown is farther upriver than the Watertown in the early records.
Bateman Sergeant-1 and Bateman-18 appear to represent the same person because: Bateman_Sergeant-1 appears to be the Bateman-18 who was a Sergeant at one time in the New World. I propose merging him into Bateman-18 to dispose of a confusing profile.
Bateman-751 and Bateman-18 appear to represent the same person because: Approximately same dates. Same wife Joan. I think that Bateman-751 is meant to be the person documented in Bateman-18.
Bateman-4337 has baptism source naming his father.
