Biography

As told to me - Sandra Bailey by a 1st cousin 1 x removed...

Alfred Bateman worked as a Carman ( use to drive horses delivering beer from the brewery after that he went into the Wharf as a dock labour and worked there until old age. The house was in a court with lots of other houses. it ran one house then one house split in two making two flats both sides of the court. the houses had a small back yard not even 12 foot deep they backed onto the Wharf and the river Thames. There was an upright piano on the back wallof the sitting room, a big square pine table scrubbed white,in the middle of the room everything was spotless and grandad's pride and joy, his gramophone next to the window on the front wall, when Granddad had any visitors he would always put on his records full blast 'Cross hand Boogie' and 'Bolero" .
