Biography

Joshua was born in Hingham on 1 Dec 1724.[1]

In 1755, he was a constable.[1]

He first married Grace Lincoln daughter of Elisah and Sarah Lincoln.[1]

He married second, Hannah Cowing Pynchon widow on 13 Oct 1782.[2][1]

Joshua was a bricklayer and. He was one of 6 men who purchased land for Beechwood cemetery in 1737. He resided on Beechwood Street, second precinct in a house on site of present home[1] of Spencer Stoughton.[2] Joshua was a member of Commmittee of Inspection in 1774.[3]

"In Beechwood, Cohasset, stands a house said to have been built in 1750 by Joshua Bates and occupied by him. He had ten children by his wife Grace Lincoln, and four by his wife Hannah Pynchon. Of these children. Levi and Ambrose served in the Revolutionary War. Lieut. Levi and Sergeant Ambrose, and were paid in Continental scrip. Levi and his family removed to Springfield. Vt. , and Ambrose bought his interest in the homestead. paying in scrip. During the fall of 1847 the Bates homestead became quite an attraction by reason of a peculiar snapping in various places on the root. The village seer was consulted, who said that the house was haunted by Lieut. Levi, he having been paid in worthless scrip. Every night a curious crowd would gather to listen awe struck to the rapping. On the front door was a large brass knocker. One night a member of the family attached a string to the knocker and passed it through the transom. When the crowd had gathered and was listening trembling to the rapping on the roof, the knocker raised and released with a tremendous knocking, whereupon the terrified crowd crled. and it is said some are running yet. The sequel of the storv is that the shingle had been dipped in tar and sand before laying, and in the October days expanded and contracted at night, hence the snapping or rapping." [4]

He died 8 Jun 1816 in Hingham.[1]
