Research Notes

The Nicholson article in The American Genealogist suggests that Edward Bates parents were William Bate(s) and Margery Phillips attested to Edwards grandmother Alice Bates'will. I have adopted and added profiles Bates-4147 and Phillips-7460 for consideration.

Prudence Bates was listed as a child on this profile without an sources. She is not listed in the Weymouth Town Records.

Date of Freemanship: Edward Bate of Weymouth should not be confused with the Edward Bates from Boston who was made freeman on 9 Mar 1636/7.[15] The Edward from Boston migrated too early, in 1633, to be Edward from Weymouth.[1][16]

Baptism date for daughter Susanna: The article from the American Genealogist reports this date as 22 Jan 1633/4.[1] The transcript of the original record shown on FindMyPast.com reads 12 Jan 1633.[7] The christening date in this profile is reported as Jan 1633/4 until the original record can be reviewed.

This came in via private message to the project but belongs here:

"The date that you cited for freemanship, 9 Mar 1636/7, is for Edward Bates of Boston, not Edward Bates of Weymouth. As Anderson points out (Great Migration begins, Vol 1, pg 132), these are two different people."

Thanks Jillaine. I updated the profile to address the disputed date.

Is it possible that Susanna (Bates) Bass (bef.1634-1712) is being confused with another Susanna Bates, esp. since most of her records are from the areas where other Bates families lived? He mentions no grandchildren with the last name of Blanchard in his will.

Added PGM to wife Susanna Putnam https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Putnam-261

daughter Susan https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bates-6030

They should probably have PGM project manager.

Likely son John as well although his marriage is uncertain. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bates-1469 ( see his mother's profile)

Bates-1814 and Bate-91 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates. Descendants of Bates-1814 align with the Bate-91. Can't find a definitive source for correct LNAB Bates or Bate. Defer to the PGM Project wisdom!
