Samuel " Harry" Bates was an accounts clerk & musician, playing piano, violin and saxophone in dance bands from the 1920's to 1960's and had his own band for many years and was organist at St Michaels Catholic Church West Bromwich. He was also secretary of the West Bromwich/Dudley/Walsall branch of the Musicians Union for 26 years. He wrote some songs but did not get any published; he did however write poems which he did get some printed in local newspapers. In his early years he attended St Michaels Catholic School in New Street, West Bromwich. He worked for many years for Steel Parts Limited, Brickhouse Lane, West Bromwich as an accounts clerk. He played piano, violin, and saxophone playing for many dance bands before starting up his own band to which I started my trumpet playing.
