Biography

James Bates immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Spelling of the Name

The baptism records in England spell the name, Bate, and Robert C. Anderson in his Great Migration series spells the name, Bate.[1] Some of the older secondary sources use the spelling, Bates, and some of the later generations appear to have adopted this spelling. Per Albert C. Bates, "The addition of the final "s" appears to be an American innovation, often making its first appearance with the second generation of the family born in this country, although the time of change is in nowise uniform."[2]

Origin

James Bate was born about 1621 in an unidentified town, probably in Kent, England. His parents had moved away from Lydd by this time (he wasn't baptized there) and had yet to arrive in Biddenden, where his siblings were baptized starting in 1624.

Immigration

James sailed aboard the Elizabeth which departed England on April 17, 1635. The passenger list included James's parents, Clement and Anna, who were both 40 years old when they immigrated, and their five children: James age 14, Clement age 12, Rachell age 8, Joseph age 5, and Ben age 2. They also had two other passengers in their group who were listed as servants: Jo Winchester age 19 and Jarvice Gold age 30.[3]

Marriage

The Last Will & Testament of James Bate. In it he mentions his wife Ruth and surviving children James, John, Joseph, Benjamin, Ruth & Rachel Lincoln [4]
