Mary Martha was born 30 Sep 1851 and baptized 29 Apr 1857 at Port Richmond Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. She was the daughter of Charles and Margaret Bates, an Irish immigrant couple. [1]

The family arrived at Lyttelton, New Zealand on 24 Mar 1864 aboard the Indian Empire. [3]
