Disputed Parentage

Elizabeth "Gerard" was apparently baptized on May 14, 1671, New London, Connecticut (age at baptism unclear). Her mother was Elizabeth (Beckwith) Gerard, and she and all others involved seem to indicate that Joshua Grant was the biological father. This would make Robert Gerard the child's infuriated step-father (cuckolded "father") and John Bates a later step-father to Elizabeth "Gerard".

Joshua Grant was Elizabeth Beckwith's brother-in-law, but it seems unclear whether it was Joshua or his wife Sarah who died in 1676 (although if he was a widower, his wife presumably died earlier). For more information, see the profile for her mother Elizabeth (Beckwith) Gerard-Bates

Robert Gerard divorced Elizabeth Beckwith in 1674 claiming that Elizabeth was not his child. Elizabeth named her daughter's father as Joshua Grant, her sister's widower. In 1677, Elizabeth Beckwith married John Bates who would have been the stepfather of this Elizabeth.

Wikitree shows Joshua Grant as Elizabeth's father - The deciding factors are 1) Elizabeth alleged that Joshua was the father, 2) the court agreed by ordering child support (i.e., seizing Joshua's estate for the use of the child).

Mother's Divorce

Oct 1674; New Haven, New Haven Co., CT - Robert Gerard [or Jarrad] made the statement that he "wished... [his wife] to take her course" or be free to remarry. [1] Robert may have threatened to make provisions for binding out their daughter Elizabeth after he deserted the family. [2]

Additional info

regarding Elizabeth's last name: Many records have her as Elizabeth Smith because she was listed in the will of Thomas Smith. Thomas Smith died with no heirs he gave his estate tohis neighbors. Elizabeth wasone of his neighbors. The will mentions her and severa pf her children. Elizabeth was a neighbor not a wife. Elizabeth's parents were divorced when she was a young child and her mother martied a Bates which sometimes people thought should have been her maiden name.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

Bates-1549 and Gerard-157 appear to represent the same person because: Same husband; same parents; same siblings. NOTE: She would have been born and baptized a Gerard (even though she was a Grant). Certainly not Bates (her mother's second husband).

Her birth name was Gerard (although her biological father was almost certainly Joshua Grant).

Her birth name was definitely not Bates. John Bates became her step-father later (in 1677).

The NEHGR source is for Elizabeth Bailey born 1694 who married John Taylor.

The families of Ancient CT source is for Elizabeth Bailey (died 6 Jun 1743) who married John 1711 and had many children. Her parents are listed as John Taylor & Elizabeth Bates.

Canadian Roots source has no sources for any dates and neither does geni.

The parents in the first two sources are different than the attached parents. There are a bunch of other profiles for Elizabeth that appear to be all confused.

I believe the parents you have attached are correct but I don't believe Bates is the correct LNAB. But, there's a lot of conflicting info mixed in all the possible duplicates.

Her mother Elizabeth Beckwith died January 15, 1719.
Gerard-157 and Gerard-547 are not ready to be merged because: There are too many issues with Elizabeth's LNAB. Robert Gerard divorced Elizabeth Beckwith who apparently had Elizabeth with Joshua Grant. See Bio. Also, profiles are stating Elizabeth Beckwith died in 1665 which is obviously incorrect. Other possible duplicates Bates-5710 & Bates-1549 that need to be resolved first.
If her mother died in 1665 how can she possibly be this woman's daughter?
Elizabeth Beckwith Garrard accused Joshua Grant, probably her sister's widower. Joshua’s estate was seized for the use of Elizabeth Garrard's child in June 1674. Matthew Beckwith, either Elizabeth’s father or older brother, served as the custodian for the child’s funds. Meanwhile, in 1673, her first husband sued her for adultery in the Rhode Island General Court, but he did not appear to press charges. Samuel Pratt was her bondsman.
Elizabeth and John had 5 children: Martha, Solomon, Samuel, Jonathan, and Ruth.
